Celebrating Filipino American History Month: Join Us for a Day of Culture and Community

October marked a special occasion for the Filipino community in the United States, celebrated as Filipino American History Month. This month honors the rich history, culture, and contributions of Filipinos and Filipino Americans. On October 16, a vibrant event called BUHAY took place at the Washington State History Museum, featuring cultural performances, delicious food, and engaging discussions.

The gathering celebrated how Filipinos contribute to the fabric of American life, promoting unity among diverse ethnic groups and showcasing our harmonious coexistence.

Official Start

The event kicked off at 3:00 PM with a warm welcome.

Opening Ceremony

At 3:30 PM, we held an opening ceremony featuring the Lupang Hinirang performed by the Pierce County Pilipino Seniors Association, followed by Maricres Valdez Castro singing The Star Spangled Banner.

Poetry by Troy Osaki

At 3:45 PM, Troy Osaki shared impactful poetry, fostering connection and reflection.

Performance by Dr. Claudia Thomas Middle School Kultura Performance Arts Club

At 5:30 PM, the KPAC showcased young Filipino American talent through dance and music.

Keynote Panel: The American Dream

The Keynote Panel titled "The American Dream: Joy, Liberation, and Filipino/X Futures" at 5:45 PM featured discussions on the complexities of the American Dream for Filipino Americans.

Closing Ceremony

The day concluded at 6:45 PM with a closing ceremony, featuring performances by the Filipiniana Multicultural Dance Troupe and reflective remarks.

Recognizing Filipino American History Month

October serves as a time for reflection and education, officially designated as Filipino American History Month in 2009. This month acknowledges the significant contributions Filipinos have made to the United States since their first documented presence in 1587.
